What is the Speedboat retrospective?

The Speedboat retrospective, from Luke Hohmann's Innovation Games, has two parts: Engines that push the team forward and Anchors that hold it back. It is the simplest of the boat metaphors and keeps the discussion focused on speed and flow.

The columns

  1. Engines
  2. Anchors

When to use it

Use it when the team feels slow, to examine delivery bottlenecks, or for a short retro with a visual twist.

Facilitator tip: ask people to estimate the drag of each anchor in hours or days lost this sprint. It turns vague complaints into numbers the team can compare, and makes it easier to justify fixing the heaviest anchor first.

How to run it in Peel in 5 steps

  1. Create a Speedboat board and share the link.
  2. Write Engines and Anchors for five minutes.
  3. Reveal and group the Anchors.
  4. Vote on the heaviest Anchors and discuss them.
  5. Agree on actions to cut one anchor loose this sprint.

Frequently asked questions

Should we estimate how heavy each anchor is?
