What is the Lessons Learned retrospective?

The Lessons Learned template captures project knowledge in three columns: Do again, Avoid, and Open questions. It is common in project management and works well at the end of any project, agile or not.

The columns

  1. Do again
  2. Avoid
  3. Open questions

When to use it

Use it at the end of a project, after a migration or a big change, or before starting a similar project.

Facilitator tip: ask each lesson to be written as advice to someone starting a similar project tomorrow. "Book the security review in week one" is reusable; "security was slow" is not. Reusable lessons are the whole point of the exercise.

How to run it in Peel in 5 steps

  1. Create a Lessons learned board and share the link with everyone involved.
  2. Write for eight minutes.
  3. Reveal and group.
  4. Vote and discuss the top lessons.
  5. Export the board as Markdown and store it where the next project will find it.
